Putting Wet Wipes vs Toilet Paper to the Test

Wet Wipes vs Toilet Paper – the debate

There is plenty of healthy debate surrounding the wet wipes vs toilet paper debate. And while ultimately it comes down to personal preference we have decided to weigh in on the debate, but on the side of wet wipes. And here is why.

Wet Wipes – the pros

Available Anywhere

A packet of wet wipes in your bags means you are ready for any emergency. Toilet paper in a public bathroom is not always a given, but with a packet of wet wipes in your bag, you need never be caught out again.

And this is the thing about wet wipes, they come in handy packaging – be it single use size, or a slightly bigger version for those who need more wipes at all times. They can be slipped into any bag, even a pocket – this isn’t something we recommend trying with a toilet roll.

Multi-use

Wet wipes can be used for anything. Spills, dirty hands or just needing a quick refresh and sanitization after touching public surfaces. They are absorbable and often designed with antibacterial ingredients. They clean and sanitize. We are not so sure toilet paper possesses the same sort of powers. In fact we know it doesn’t.

Flushable

So this is usually where the controversy lies in the whole wet wipes vs toilet paper debate – the flushability element. And yes, when it comes to flushing non-flushable wipes there are a host of problems associated with this that can cause a lot of damage. In that respect toilet paper is the better choice.

But when it comes to truly flushable wipes – like those using an advanced technology such as Hydrofine – pioneered by flushable wipes manufacturers, Albaad, the wipes win. Truly flushable wipes are completely biodegradable (and designed to be so) and they are able to pass through wastewater systems with ease. They don’t create blockages. A wipe that passes the international Flushability Standards, is just that, flushable.

wet wipes vs toilet paper

Comfort and Hygiene

Ultimately however the whole wet wipes vs toilet paper debate rests on comfort and hygiene. People are looking for comfort – and wet wipes deliver that. Wet wipes can be completely customized to meet a consumer’s comfort needs, from their size and shape, to their ingredients and fragrance (if any).

When it comes to putting hygiene first we think wet wipes win it again. They can be produced with antibacterial ingredients, or wholly natural ingredients that are known to have cleansing and disinfecting properties.

But what wet wipes really deliver is that combination of comfort and hygiene. This is what makes them the ultimate solution. And while we appreciate the amount of time toilet paper has been around for, nothing beats the comfort and convenience of a wet wipe.

Flushable Wipes

It is no secret that the majority of “flushable” wipes on the market are only flushable in the sense that they can be flushed down the toilet, but are not biodegradable by any means.

The Perceived Problem

Flushable wipes have an image problem. Wipes that are falsely advertised as flushable when they do the opposite, are causing an image problem for truly flushable wipes. The average person is now drifting away from using wet wipes to avoid causing any unnecessary environmental damage.

Wipes that do not pass international standards on what constitutes a flushable wipe are the ones blocking wastewater and sewage systems. They are also the wipes contributing to the infamous fatbergs that are the headache of municipalities and local governments everywhere.

Everyone loves a wet wipe, they’re handy and versatile and do a much better job at cleaning than a regular tissue. They are convenient when travelling and easy to carry. Their ability to clean just about anything has made them increasingly popular over the years.

Fortunately, there are some truly flushable wipes on the market, you just have to know where to look.

Why You Need Wet Wipes

If you’ve ever taken care of kids, you’ll understand the importance of wet wipes. It’s fair to say that the majority of mothers and caretakers alike rely heavily on wet wipes. Whether it’s to clean kids’ faces and hands, or to clean anything they touch, they’re a necessity. They also have more practical uses, they are great for taking off makeup while not bothering skin. If you’re in need of  a great replacement for toilet paper, wet wipes are a more hygienic alternative.

The important thing to remember is that if you’re going to use wet wipes, make sure they aren’t damaging the environment or your plumbing.

Truly Flushable

When it comes to wipes that are truly flushable there are some currently available that do exactly what they’re advertised to do. As leading flushable wipes manufacturers Albaad produces moist toilet tissue which is sustainable and ultimately environmentally friendly.

Albaad is one of the three biggest wet wipe manufacturers in the world and thankfully they’re highly committed to being environmentally friendly. They currently have multiple research facilities spread over three continents in the hopes of improving their ecological footprint. They’re constantly innovating and have recently spent 180 million dollars to build a new plant that helps make their wet wipes recyclable and biodegradable.

Tips For The Future

When it comes to choosing flushable wipes try to keep in mind these helpful tips

The first step is to make sure the brand of wipes you’re buying are truly flushable. Do your due diligence into the companies behind the wipes. Are they able to show compliance with international standards on flushable wipes? Do they have an environmental sustainability policy that covers all of their wipe manufacturing? The wipe companies should show that they are committed to innovation that will make all wet wipes more sustainable in the years ahead.

Remember to always follow the wet wipes manufacturers guidelines on how to use and dispose of these types of wipes. This might mean flushing them one at a time or just throwing them in the bin. These guidelines should be visible on the packaging or the company website. Truly flushable wipes should have no issues passing through well-maintained toilet systems. To help make sure you don’t have any build-up, make sure your plumbing is clear and able to handle them.

This is what makes them popular not only with parents, but with almost anyone. They save time, as they can be used and then disposed of quickly. The Different Types of Wet Wipes

Since the invention of the first wet wipes in the 1960’s, wet wipes have come a long way in terms of how they are manufactured and what they are used for. There are now a multitude of different types of wipes from several leading wet wipes manufacturers

We take a look at some of the main types of wet wipes available today

Flushable wipes

The flushable wipes industry is perhaps the fastest growing sector in terms of the different types of wet wipes. Flushable wet wipes are biodegradable and the most convenient for consumers in terms of disposability. They also represent a new shift in wet wipe production, and one which prioritizes sustainability first and foremost.

There are a number of international regulatory standards wipes must meet in order to be fully flushable, and leading flushable wipes manufacturers ensure their products are aligned with and compliant with these standards. Generally flushable wipes must be biodegradable and proven to not block toilet pipes and waste water treatment plants and systems.

Hand wipes

Used primarily for cleaning hands and hand hygiene, this type of wipes have been very popular in recent years. They are especially popular due to their convenience – most now come in sachet or small packaging forms and can be carried anywhere. They are the perfect solution for situations where hand and soap washing facilities are not available or not guaranteed to be available.

They are also important during times when people on a global scale are forced to address their standards of hygiene and hand hygiene especially. Better hand hygiene is proven to reduce the risk of disease and virus transmission and hand wipes have a significant role to play in this.

Leading hand wipes manufacturers understand the need for hand wipes that first and foremost perform in terms of effective hand hygiene. This means wipes that can effectively clean and disinfect and which have been proven to kill bacteria and viruses when used properly.

Hand wipes are now easily one of the most commonly used types of wet wipes. They can be used in any environment, from schools to hospitals, to homes and restaurants. They can be used safely by toddlers and children (depending on their ingredients) and play an important role in improving hand hygiene across the world.

Baby and toddler wipes

Baby and toddler wipes can be used for a variety of different purposes when it comes to the care of young children. Whether it’s for cleaning dirty hands and faces, or cleaning up inevitable spillages, or as an emergency solution when there is no toilet paper available, wet wipes have fast become an essential part of every parent’s bag. The types of baby and toddler wipes now available also reflect the growing needs and concerns of parents today – from wipes for sensitive skin, to flushable, biodegradable wipes, to wipes in smaller packages for trips out of the home.

Wet wipes for babies and toddlers have done a lot to help parents save time when it comes to cleaning and hygiene for their little ones. But also parents are more conscious than ever before of the importance of wipes designed especially for the sensitive skin of their little ones, with greater demand for wipes using natural ingredients.

Household cleaning wipes

There is almost no limit to the types of wipes available for household cleaning. These can include wipes to clean floors, wipes to clean bathrooms, wipes to clean ovens….the list is endless.

Household cleaning wipes are designed to effectively clean household surfaces and items. They represent a huge time saving for those cleaning their homes. Floor wipes, for example, require much less effort when it comes to cleaning floors than using a traditional mop and bucket.

Household cleaning wipes can now be customized with different ingredients and fragrances, according to their designated use. Furniture cleaning wipes, for example, can be infused with a mild lotion to make cleaning furniture easy. They can also be manufactured according to an anti-static formula designed especially to reduce dust and provide at the same time a fresh and pleasant scent.

Other types of wet wipes now available include professional wipes (for automotive and transport cleaning), para-medical wipes and veterinary and animal care wipes.

The History of the Wet Wipe

Wet wipes have come a long way since their invention. What began life as a humble woven fabric soaked in water or cleanser solution is now a sophisticated consumer product. Wet wipes are now used to clean hands, homes, babies and more. They are also available in a wide range of sizes and weights, can come with fragrances or not, can be used for disinfecting or as antibacterial cleaning solutions, and are widely available in a variety of packaging types and sizes. Also importantly they can now be manufactured to be completely flushable and biodegradable.

How did we get here?

The first wet wipes were invented in the USA. Arthur Julius is credited with having invented them in 1957. Arthur worked in cosmetics and created the first wipes in his New York loft apartment when he made changes to a soap portioning machine. A year later in 1958 he trademarked his product, the Wet-Nap.

Coming from a cosmetics background Arthur originally intended for his wipes to be used in the cosmetics industry, and to improve skin hygiene.

However his invention was not presented to the public until the 1960 National Restaurant Show in Chicago, during which time Arthur had worked with a mechanic to perfect the machine which produced his wipes. Three years later he sold his wipes to Colonel Harland Sanders for his customers to use in his Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants. It was a perfect fit even if it was not one that Arthur had anticipated when first developing what he intended to be a wipe for the cosmetics industry. In the past 25 years KFC has handed out to consumers almost a billion wet wipes.

Only in the 1970s however did the technology exist to mass produce disposable non-woven wipes. These developments in technology and manufacturing are what then allowed the industry to take off.

Where are we now?

In 2019 the global wet wipes market was estimated to be valued at around US$14 billion, reflecting how far its development and use has come since the 1960’s.

Wet wipes are popular for many reasons including –

-Their convenience

-They improve hygiene and make it easier to maintain

-They perform well, they are generally of good quality, and provide almost the same level of hygiene as washing with soap and water

-They are easy to use, for all sectors of society, including the very young and very old, and they are safe for all ages

-They save time and are efficient

-They are disposable and increasingly with the advent of moist toilet tissue and flushable wipes, they are a sustainable solution as well

It is fair to say that wet wipes are currently an indispensable consumer product. They are used in homes, schools, childcare facilities, food and beverage outlets, industries, institutions, hospitals, clinics and more.

The future of wet wipes

The future of wet wipes looks set to center around environmentally sustainability issues. With so many wipes being used their disposability is increasingly called into question in a world more aware of sustainability and environmental protection issues.

This means wet wipes manufacturers must be at the forefront of efforts and developments to make the industry more sustainable. This means advancements in flushability and into developing truly flushable wipes. It means pioneering more biodegradable materials for wipes production and it means ensuring wet wipes manufacturers are aware of their products’ lifecycle.  Leading wet wipes manufacturers understand their responsibility to ensure a better future for all of us.

Why Hand Wipes are Better for Hand Cleaning than Sanitizer

When hand washing is really not an option – when people are on the go, somewhere remote, or just somewhere with limited access to hand washing facilities – the question ultimately arises, what is the best way to hygienically clean our hands?

For many people the choice comes down to two main options. Sanitizer or hand wipes. But when it comes down to it, which is the best choice and why?

There are of course comfort and convenience considerations when it comes to choosing between the two. But when it comes to the most important consideration, hygiene, which is the clear winner?

Hygiene

According to a study conducted and then published by the Special Pathogens Laboratory (SPL), wipes are more effective in removing bacterial sores from hands. Why? Mainly because of the mechanical wiping action users deploy when using wipes to clean and disinfect their hands. This is an action that is possibly only when using a wipe or cloth for hand cleaning. This action physically removes more bacterial spores than simply cleaning hands with sanitizer.

Albaad’s cleanitize cleaning and disinfecting wipes (EPA Registration #75459-1) recently received EPA approval for its claims that they can kill the virus SARS-CoV-s (the cause of COVID-19) when used as directed on hard and non-porous surfaces. As leading hand wipes manufacturers Albaad are committed to developing new technologies and more effective ingredients for wet wipes which clean and disinfect better.

Safety

When it comes to young children, especially sanitizers can be tricky. Apart from the fact that they can be messy and difficult to transport, as spillage is a risk, there is also the possibility of young children getting sanitizer in their eyes, if transferred from their hands. This issue does not exist with wipes, which are a proven safe and effective hand cleaning method. This makes them safe for children to take to school or for parents to keep at hand for all those times they need to ensure their children clean their hands.

Convenience and ease of use

The common consensus seems to be that wipes are easier to carry, less messy and more convenient. They don’t leak, can be manufactured in packaging of different sizes and shapes, and are easy to carry in any type of bag or even pocket. They are the perfect solution to have at hand for those instances when hand washing with soap and water just isn’t possible.

When it comes to hygiene, convenience and safety, wet wipes are the clear winners over sanitizer.

what makes a flushable wipe really flushable

Are Flushable Wipes Really Flushable?

Flushable wipes are flushable, if they meet international Flushability Standards. We know that wipes offer a level of comfort and hygiene and overall convenience that toilet paper just can not deliver. Flushable wipes take this level of convenience to a whole new level, and consumers love them because of this.

However we also know that wipes which claim to be flushable and are not, are causing huge problems for municipalities and councils the world over in terms of fatbergs and blockages of water systems and treatment plants.

This is why the standards set by the International Water Services Flushability Group (IWSFG) are so crucial for flushable wipes manufacturers, suppliers, retailers and consumers alike.

Their updated standards demand the following  –

  1. They must meet environmental protection standards and not contain intentional plastic fibers
  2. They must be able to clean toilet and drain lines
  3. They disintegrate under pressure from hydraulic forces in sewer pipes
  4. They must pass settling requirements
  5. They are biodegradable

Only when these criteria are met, are wipes really flushable. Only when these standards are met can consumers truly trust the wipes they are using.

Alongside the IWSFG standards are the EDANA/INDA flushability guidelines.

For these to be met they must must also meet the following criteria –

  1. The wipes are able to fully clear water pipes and toilets
  2. Passes through wastewater conveyance systems as well as wastewater treatment, reuse and operational systems without causing blockages, clogging or other operational obstacles
  3. The wipes can not be found in effluent or waste sludge leaving wastewater treatment plants and systems

The UK has their own Fine to Flush standards, or Water Industry Specification (WIS) 4-02-06. Wet wipes manufacturers can choose to have their wipes tested by WRc, who have their own set flushability standards in line with Water UK standards. Wet wipes manufacturers that pass this testing and meet the criteria will be able to display the ‘Fine to Flush’ symbol on their product.

When it comes to choosing a flushable wipe manufacturer it makes sense to go with one that manufactures according to all of these standards. Albaad, for example, was the first company worldwide to have passed the IWSFG Flushability Standard Test with their moist toilet tissue paper. They also have certification that shows their flushable wipes are in line with EDANA/INDA flushability guidelines and that they meet the Fine to Flush criteria.

How did they do this? They developed their Hydrofine technology in order to manufacture wipes that are truly flushable each and every time. Their innovative wipes are based on a strong and resistant electric-base sheet and are fully biodegradable at the same time.

wet wipes vs toilet paper

When it comes to choosing a wet wipes manufacturer it is important to choose one whose wipes are truly flushable. This means choosing one that meets all of the available flushability standards in the global arena, meaning the wipes are approved in every market.
